In the early 1500s, Giovanni, having just returned from a long period of study in Bologna, returns to Mantua, where he meets his half-sister Annabella, whom he had left while still a child and who has now become a beautiful young girl. Struck by a violent passion for his half-sister, the young man, unsuccessfully dissuaded by his friend and advisor Fra Bonaventura, confesses his love to the girl who, in turn, reveals that she has always been in love with him. Having become pregnant, Annabella agrees to marry a fellow student of Giovanni's, Soranzo, with whom she refuses, however, to have physical contact. When Soranzo discovers his wife's state, he proposes to kill her along with her father and brother, whom he holds equally responsible for the intrigue he has fallen victim to.
