An alleged murderer is about to be sentenced to death based on the testimony of a witness who is absolutely convinced of the infallibility of his watch. But when he realises that the clock, like all human things, is subject to errors and flaws, the witness hastens to recant his testimony and fight for the acquittal of the accused. He is indeed acquitted of the charge and set free, but although life is easy for him, cheered even by the love of a girl, the man is not happy; his conscience vexes him and the presence of the witness who has been the arbiter of his life haunts him to the point that he decides to suppress him. But he cannot carry out the insane gesture and after an inner crisis, he spontaneously returns to prison to atone for his guilt.
